Frequently Asked Questions

Hi there! Have some questions? We’re here to help. Here are answers to some common questions. Find the answers below, or call us at 985-276-4174.

  • Will your company maintain my generator after installation?

Catahoula Electric has Factory Trained and Certified Techs that will maintain and repair your generator for the life of the generator.  We look forward to maintaining an ongoing relationship with our customers.

  • Can I maintain my own generator?

You are more than welcome to perform maintenance and repairs on your generator.  You however cannot perform warranty work, as this requires a Tech ID to get Generac to honor warranty work. We strongly recommend using an Authorized Service Dealer to maintain your generator and perform repairs on an ongoing basis.  Catahoula Electric would love to be that Service Dealer for you.

  • What does a typical generator installation cost?

There are multiple styles of generators.  So pricing can fluctuate greatly.  When getting quotes from installers, we always recommend the following:

    • Ensure the company is licensed and insured
    • Ensure they are an Authorized Dealer/Installer and Service Dealer
    • If it seems to good to be true it usually is and sometimes you find that out when it’s to late.
  • How do I know what size generator I need?

Let Catahoula Electric do a sizing report during your free consultation, and we will determine the size your home needs, based on the report and years of first hand experience sizing.  Don’t rely on online sizers, or your neighbor telling you “Well they only put this size on my house and your house has the same square footage”.

  • What does an In-Home Consultation consist of?

    • Friendly Service
    • Pictures will be taken of the exterior of your home, some appliances, and possibly the attic or crawl space.
    • Measurements will be recorded
    • A list of appliances will be requested, to ensure proper sizing
    • All questions asked by the customer will be answered by our Installation Specialist.
    • Typically takes between 30-60 minutes.
  • What takes place during a typical install?

    • Electricity and gas will be turned off between 2-8 hours.
    • Installs typically only take a day
    • Drilling, cutting and banging will take place throughout the day.
    • Trenching may be necessary, we do our best to return lawn to existing state, however dips or bumps may be left in the trench due to soil conditions and weather.
    • Piping and conduit may possibly be installed the the exterior of home and wiring and piping may be ran through the attic
    • All areas worked in will be cleaned and left as if we were never there.
  • Where can I put my generator?

Some companies are quick to put your generator wherever is most convenient, which is not always the safest option.  At Catahoula Electric we abide by all local, national and manufacturer; codes and requirements when it comes to choosing a location.  Some times that puts the generator further from the electric service and gas meter than desired, but in the end the job will be done properly and your family will be safe from carbon monoxide.

  • What is Load Management?

Load management, is a process in which we use modules to shed non priority loads during overload situations, to prevent generator from shutting down from an overload.  It’s allows a customer to have the potential to use all appliances, but not all at once if generator is to small to handle the full load of home or business.

  • What is a Sure Start?

A Sure Start is a device that is installed on the AC.  It reduces starting amperage by up to 70%.  This allows for installation of smaller, more cost effective generators if a customer is on a budget.

It also helps reduce the load on the generator while the AC starts to prevent dips and spikes.

  • What is a home generator transfer switch?

A transfer switch is a device that changes your home's electricity from utility power to generator power without any manual labor. They are designed to be compatible with various generators and must follow local building code requirements during installation.

  • Who can install a home generator transfer switch?

It is best to have a qualified electrician install your transfer switch. Cattahoula Electric LLC has experienced electricians who can help you with the project and ensure that your installation meets local codes and regulations for St Tammany, Tangipahoa, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parishes.

  • Why do you need a home generator transfer switch?

Transfer switches ensure safety when switching between generator and utility power. They also allow a smoother transition from the generator to the utility power.

  • How do you install a home generator transfer switch?

Installing a transfer switch begins with turning off the main circuit breaker and disconnecting the utility power from home. Transfer switches must be wired per local building codes and manufacturer's instructions and properly grounded to avoid electrical shock or damage. Once everything is connected correctly, you can turn on the generator and move the transfer switch to the generator position.

Most Transfer switches will automatically activate when a power outage is detected. Transfer switches will also allow you to switch between generator and utility power manually. To do this, you must first turn off the main circuit breaker and disconnect the utility power from the home. Once the transfer switch is in the generator position, you can then turn on the generator.
